A Haven in the Hills: One Man’s Mission to Transform Children’s Lives in Uganda

The sun rises over the rolling hills of rural Uganda, casting a golden glow on the village of Mayoole. Here, amidst a landscape of vibrant green fields and red dirt roads, lies a sanctuary for vulnerable children: Light for the Needy Children’s Centre. More than just an orphanage, it stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of one man, Geoffrey, a nurse whose heart beats with boundless compassion.

From Humble Beginnings: The Seeds of a Dream

Geoffrey, A beacon of hope for vulnerable children in Uganda

Geoffrey’s journey began in 2018 with a simple act of kindness: distributing school supplies to children in need. His initiative, “One Pen, One Book,” aimed to ignite young minds and pave the way towards a brighter future through education. But as he delved deeper into these communities, a harsh reality unfolded before him. Many children were not merely lacking the tools for learning; they were deprived of the fundamental pillars of childhood – family, stability, and a safe haven to call home.

Faces of resilience: The children of Light for the Needy Children’s Centre.

“Many children were living with single parents or grandparents,” Geoffrey recounts, his voice resonating with a quiet determination. “Some were abandoned when their mothers remarried, and their new husbands refused to accept them.”
Witnessing this vulnerability sparked an unquenchable fire within him. He knew he had to transcend temporary solutions and forge a path toward lasting change. Thus, with unwavering resolve, he founded Light for the Needy Children’s Centre, a sanctuary where children could find refuge, healing, and the opportunity to blossom.

Within the Walls: Where Love and Laughter Echo

Today, the orphanage is a vibrant tapestry of 45 young lives, each thread woven with resilience and hope. Laughter dances through the courtyard, harmonizing with the tantalizing aromas wafting from Big Mama’s kitchen.

Affectionately known as “Big Mama,” she is the heart of the orphanage, a woman who embodies the very essence of motherhood. With gentle hands and a warm smile, she nourishes the children with hearty meals prepared with love, tucks them into bed with stories and lullabies that banish fear, and nurses them back to health with a soothing touch and a mother’s intuition.

“Big Mama washes the little ones like those she’s carrying in the photo. She sleeps beside the children and cooks food for them,” Geoffrey shares, his words painting a vivid picture of her unwavering dedication.
But the care transcends the walls of the orphanage. Geoffrey and his team champion family reunification whenever possible. And when a child rejoins their family, the support continues, with the orphanage providing educational resources, healthcare, and clothing to empower families to break free from the shackles of poverty and build a stable foundation for their children.

Education: Igniting Young Minds

Education is the cornerstone of Geoffrey’s vision. Every child at the orphanage attends school, their eagerness to learn a testament to the transformative power of opportunity.

“We have managed to enroll all the children in school,” Geoffrey states with pride. “Some had never attended school before.”
But his aspirations soar beyond the walls of a traditional classroom. He envisions a future where the orphanage boasts its own school, a community health center, and fertile land bursting with life. This self-sustaining model would nourish not only the children but also the surrounding community, creating a ripple effect of empowerment.

“To address food security, we want to buy land for agriculture and train community members in sustainable farming practices,” Geoffrey explains, painting a vivid picture of his vision for a self-sufficient future. “We also plan to build our own children’s home, school, and community health center to eliminate the burden of rent, tuition, and medical costs.”

Achieving this vision requires unwavering support. The orphanage, with its website needychildrenministry.org, relies on the kindness of donors and volunteers to meet the children’s daily needs—food, clothing, school fees, medical care, and even basic necessities like clean water.

Challenges Met with Triumph: A Symphony of Resilience

Despite the strides made, the orphanage faces relentless challenges. Access to clean water remains a significant hurdle, with community members often enduring long walks and hours-long waits. Food security casts a long shadow, as does the constant need to cover school fees, medical expenses, and other basic necessities.

“We face challenges with food, school fees, scholastic materials, medications, and water sources,” Geoffrey reveals, his voice heavy with the weight of these daily struggles. “Both we and the community members have to travel a long distance to fetch water, and sometimes people have to wait in line for one to two hours.”

Yet, amidst these trials, the spirit of resilience shines through. The orphanage has secured land where they are growing vegetables, supplementing the children’s diet and reducing food costs.

The Orphanage managed to lease a piece of land to grow vegetables

“We also managed to lease a piece of land where we are growing some vegetables and food to reduce the bills,” Geoffrey shares.
They have also harnessed the power of the sun, installing a solar panel system that provides reliable electricity, along with a television that opens a window to the world, bringing news, entertainment, and educational opportunities to the children.

The Solar Panel with limited power

“We have solar panels, but they aren’t capable of generating enough power to keep the lights on until morning,” Geoffrey explains. “We opted for solar power because we are in a village where there’s no electricity.”

More Than Just Orphans: Embracing Every Child

Light for the Needy Child Centre is more than just an orphanage; it’s a sanctuary for all vulnerable children. It opens its doors to those from impoverished families, children with disabilities, those living with AIDS/HIV, and even young single mothers struggling to provide for their own children. This inclusive approach reflects Geoffrey’s deep-seated belief that every child, regardless of circumstance, deserves a chance to thrive.

Transforming Lives: Whispers of Resilience and Hope

The impact of the orphanage reverberates through the lives of the children, their stories echoing with resilience and hope:

Samanya’s Story:

Twelve-year-old Samanya Joseph radiates a love for learning that shines especially bright in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. But life dealt Samanya a difficult hand early on. Orphaned at a tender age, he was left in the care of his grandmother, Gertrude Mukyala. They faced hardship together, but Samanya always held onto his dream of becoming an engineer. Tragically, his grandmother passed away, leaving Samanya alone and with no support system.
Before finding refuge at the orphanage, Samanya struggled to meet his basic needs. His dream felt distant, his future uncertain. But the orphanage provided him with the stability and care he so desperately needed. He was enrolled in school, where he thrived academically, his natural curiosity and love for learning reignited. Samanya’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of a supportive environment to nurture a child’s dreams.

Sharifa’s Story:

Kisakye Sharifa, a determined 12-year-old, knows hardship far beyond her years. Her mother, facing impossible choices and lacking support, was forced to make an agonizing decision—leave Sharifa to fend for herself. Suddenly homeless and alone, Sharifa found herself navigating a world that seemed to have no place for her.
Sharifa’s story, sadly, is not uncommon in this region of Uganda, where many vulnerable families struggle with poverty and lack of resources. Her mother, like many single mothers, was particularly susceptible to exploitation. Without a support system or access to social services, she felt trapped, leading to the heartbreaking decision to abandon her child.
But Sharifa’s story doesn’t end there. The orphanage welcomed her with open arms, providing a safe haven and the loving care she desperately needed. She has blossomed in this nurturing environment, excelling in her studies and finding inspiration in the compassionate staff. Sharifa now dreams of becoming a nurse, driven by a desire to care for others as she has been cared for.
The orphanage is committed to not only providing for children like Sharifa but also addressing the root causes of child abandonment. Through economic empowerment programs, support systems for struggling mothers, and access to social services, they are working to prevent other families from facing the same impossible choices that led to Sharifa’s separation from her mother.

Simon’s Story:

Thirteen-year-old Tumwebaze Simon carries a heavy burden of tragedy. His father was brutally poisoned by his own mother, who had been manipulated by a wealthy man with false promises of marriage and financial security. This man preyed on Simon’s mother’s vulnerability, convincing her to steal the family’s land titles in exchange for a future that never materialized. When Simon’s father demanded the return of their property, his mother, driven to desperation, poisoned him. The wealthy man, having achieved his goal, abandoned her, leaving her consumed by guilt and shame. She tragically took her own life, leaving Simon orphaned and alone.
Despite the unimaginable cruelty he has witnessed, Simon has found solace and strength within the walls of the orphanage. He is a resilient and determined young boy who has found a sense of purpose in education. He aspires to become a lawyer, driven by a desire to seek justice and protect the vulnerable, like himself. Simon excels in his studies and is a shining example of the transformative power of hope and opportunity.

How You Can Help
Financial assistance is crucial to the orphanage’s survival. Your donation can provide:
Nutritious meals: $10 can feed a child for a week.
Educational materials: $25 can provide a child with school supplies for a year.
Medical care: $50 can cover essential medical expenses for a child.
Clean water access: $100 can help improve water infrastructure for the orphanage and surrounding community.

But financial assistance isn’t the only way to contribute. Geoffrey welcomes volunteers with open arms.  Teachers can offer online lessons via video conferencing, nurses can travel to Uganda to provide medical care and participate in outreach programs, and those with skills in fundraising, grant writing, or social media management can contribute remotely.
“Secondly, many people who like donating time and services can volunteer in many ways,” Geoffrey encourages. “A teacher in the UK, USA, or elsewhere can organize an online lesson and teach the children. A nurse can travel to volunteer at our facility and join us during medical camps and outreaches. However, even a person with any other skill will also be considered.”

Building a Network of Support
The orphanage’s success is a testament to the power of community and connection. Through social media, Geoffrey connected with Dominic, a fellow nurse who was moved by the orphanage’s mission. Dominic began by donating personally, but his compassion soon led him to create a fundraising platform to expand their reach.
“We met brother Dominic on Instagram as a stranger who would also want to support the cause,” Geoffrey recalls.  “From his heart, he started donating to us and later decided to create a fundraising platform on GoFundMe so that we can make ends meet… It’s 4 years now since we met brother Dominic.”
Dominic’s support, along with contributions from a growing network of individuals around the world, has been instrumental in sustaining the orphanage. These generous individuals provide vital resources, covering everything from food and clothing to school fees and medical bills.

Support comes from different corners of the  world

“It’s not only brother Dominic that has been supporting us; there are others like brothers and sisters (Harry, Giorgio, Jacob, Justin, Vanessa, Vishnee, Ruth, Erica, etc.) who donate through GoFundMe and Remitly to wire direct donations to help us pay bills and provide necessities like food, clothing, shoes, utilities, school fees and tuition, scholastic materials, and medical bills.”

A Shared Vision: Brothers United in Compassion

The orphanage was founded by two brothers, Geoffrey Itakaliriya and Godfrey Namadhi Mukose, who share a deep passion for helping vulnerable children. Together, they have nurtured this dream from its humble beginnings, starting with just 20 children, to the thriving haven it is today.

A Personal Sacrifice: Fueling Hope with Selflessness

Geoffrey, a dedicated nurse outside the
orphanage

Geoffrey’s commitment to the orphanage extends far beyond his role as a founder and director. He personally contributes a significant portion of his income to support the children, even putting his own dreams on hold to prioritize their needs.
“I am called Geoffrey Kisaamo Itakaliriya, an enrolled nurse by profession…” he shares. “It was very difficult for me to find another job, but, being a prayerful person, I prayed and fasted for my next job, and it took me only three weeks to get another job where I am earning 930,000 Ugandan shillings monthly. But I still share 50% of my salary with the children; it was a commitment to God, and I feel good whenever I share with these less fortunate souls…”
His dedication is a testament to his unwavering belief in the orphanage’s mission. He hopes that one day, when the orphanage achieves greater financial stability, he will be able to pursue his own educational aspirations, further enhancing his ability to serve the community.

Dreams of a Brighter Future

A Man with great vision

Geoffrey’s vision extends beyond the present challenges. He dreams of a day when the orphanage will be self-sufficient, with its own school, medical center, and fertile land to cultivate food and generate income. He envisions a thriving community where children receive quality education, access to healthcare, and opportunities to reach their full potential.
“I believe that one day my dreams will come true when the orphanage is independent after setting up its own school, children’s home, and a piece of land for agriculture, since most of the funds are going towards education, medical bills, and food bills,” Geoffrey shares, his voice filled with hope. “Once this happens, I will have a chance to save a bigger portion of my salary for my diploma in Dentistry. And if there’s anyone who can sponsor my further education, it will take three years (each year has two semesters, and each semester costs approximately 2,700,000 Ugandan shillings, totaling 24,300,000 Ugandan shillings for the full course).”

A Man of Many Roles
Geoffrey’s story is a testament to the power of compassion, dedication, and community. He has created a haven of hope in the heart of Uganda, transforming the lives of vulnerable children and inspiring others to join his cause. By supporting Geoffrey’s orphanage, you’re not just donating to a cause; you’re investing in a future where every child has a chance to thrive.
